It describes how the regiments were raised, armed, fed and controlled on the battlefield, whilst exploring the diverse strategies and tactics that were used in the deployment of the various cavalry, infantry and artillery regiments involved in the different engagements.
Together with thirty-two colour plates displaying the uniforms and standards of both sides, there are also diagrams, maps, photographs of arms and equipment, and black and white illustrations from the time.
