A well documented account of the last act of Napoleon’s reign, beginning with the defeat of his armies at Waterloo on 18 June 1815 and ending on 8 August, with his embarkation on HMS Northumberland. Together with contemporary illustrations, portraits and later photographs, the book also includes the first ever publication of a letter written by Napoleon to the Prince Regent, protesting at his treatment as a prisoner of war and not as a sovereign, and describing his hopes of being allowed to settle in England or America as a refugee and a private individual.
