Even before he became a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese after the fall of Singapore in 1942, this Australian soldier was invariably helping to process the photographs that he and his friends had taken of their new and exotic tropical surroundings.

After captivity, this hobby became a private obsession that saw him secretly taking and processing photographs of life in Changi Prison and later on the appalling Burma Railway.

Supported by the author’s detailed text, these fascinating images have become a uniquely personal, photographic diary of life in captivity after the fall of Singapore and a poignant reminder of the suffering that these young soldiers endured.
