The Boer War gave the British military establishment reason to effect swift reforms in the period which followed the end of the hostilities in 1902. The early defeats inflicted by a comparatively small number of Boer citizen-soldiers had exposed deficiencies in leadership, training and, most particularly, equipment. The latter problem was addressed progressively from 1908-80 through the adoption of the new equipment patterns of 1908, 1937, 1944 and 1958, which are examined in a text complemented by numerous photographs and eight full page colour plates by the author himself.
